For a long time, Messina Denaro suffered from colon cancer. Italian media say that over the past few weeks his condition has deteriorated significantly and the “godfather” has been transferred from the maximum security prison in L'Aquila to the San Salvatore hospital.

Italian media call Messina Denaro “the last godfather.” He has been on the run from the police since 1993. It is believed that Denaro committed his first murder at age 18. He was found guilty of numerous crimes. In particular, Denaro was accused of participating in the planning of murders in 1992 by anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

He was also found responsible for numerous bombings in 1993 in Rome, Florence and Milan. Then 10 people died. The investigation accused Denaro of kidnapping 12-year-old Giuseppe Di Matteo. According to law enforcement officials, he did this to prevent the boy’s parents from testifying against the mafia. The leader of Cosa Nostra held the child for 2 years and then killed him.

According to the most conservative estimates, Denaro killed at least 50 people. Once in an interview, he stated that he took the lives of so many people that “there would be enough for a cemetery.”

Denaro was detained only on January 16, 2023 near a private medical clinic in the capital of Sicily, Palermo.
