Warming has come to Antarctica

The positive temperature remained for almost two days – July 16-17. During these days, it also rained and sleet.

On July 16, a significant increase in the maximum daily temperature was recorded at the Ukrainian station “Akademik Vernadsky”. It rose by more than 8 degrees: from -4.2 degrees to 4.5, – the scientists reported.

Plus temperatures were also recorded at the British station “Rosera”, which is located 300 kilometers south of “Vernadsky”.

The main reason for this change in weather is the phenomenon of “atmospheric river”. This is a narrow strip with a high concentration of atmospheric moisture, which quickly transfers warm air masses and moisture from the tropics to the polar regions.

If such cases become more frequent, the melting processes of glaciers will intensify, which in turn will lead to a gradual desalination of coastal waters. And this threatens the destruction of various ecosystems of both the white continent and the ocean around it, – the scientists explained.

By the way, after a prolonged heat wave, long-awaited moisture has finally arrived in Ukraine. Forecasters predict that rain should be expected for several more days.
