– He came up with the idea to start keeping such a video diary, so as not to forget certain moments, those emotions that were alive when he was experiencing some events. To feel them again,” noted the wife of the ex-minister Zhanna Monastyrskaya .
She added that the minister's idea could have been inspired by their family's favorite movie, Avatar.
– It even seems to me that they are somewhat similar in appearance to the main character. He started keeping it (the diary – Ed.) at the beginning of the war, – Zhanna Monastyrskaya clarified.
The ex-minister’s mother, Alla Monastyrskaya, suggested that he “wrote down his thoughts that he could not tell everyone out loud.”
“We need a deep understanding of life, death and the purpose in life, the meaning of life, so as not to plunge into this despair, which terribly drags us down every moment of today,” Denis Monastyrsky noted in one of the video recordings of his diary.
A documentary portrait film dedicated to the former head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs was created on the basis of this video diary.

The role of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs at the beginning of the war
The head of the patronage service of the former head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Evgeny Mironenko, recalled that after the invasion of Russian troops, Denis Monastyrsky received all the operational information, which he passed on to the state leadership.
Based on this data, decisions were made to protect the state.
– Denis had all the RAM. In most cases, the “eyes” were the border guards, the police, and the State Emergency Service. If you see the RAM, then you give some recommendations for making decisions. He had it all on his toes,” Mironenko said.
According to him, Monastyrsky “was one of the figures who was considered by the enemy for one of the first liquidations.”
Death of Denis Monastyrsky
On January 18, 2023, a State Emergency Service helicopter crashed in Brovary, Kyiv region. He fell next to a kindergarten and a high-rise building. The leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine was on board.
As a result of the plane crash, the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Denis Monastyrsky, First Deputy Minister Yevgeny Enin, Secretary of State Yuri Lubkovich, other officials and the helicopter crew were killed.
The tragedy claimed the lives of a 5-year-old girl and her mother, who at that moment had just brought the child to kindergarten.
As the current head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Igor Klimenko explained in the documentary, on the day of the tragedy Denis Monastyrsky decided to fly by helicopter because he had to visit many places.
“He was supposed to be in Izyum to reward the National Guardsmen.” Then he was supposed to go to the Donetsk region, then to the Dnepropetrovsk region. Then, remember, an enemy missile hit a residential building, and he wanted to visit this place. That’s why he flew by helicopter because it’s a little faster,” Klimenko said.
Five officials of the State Service of Ukraine for Emergency Situations (SSES) received suspicion in the case of the plane crash. According to investigators, they were involved in violations of traffic safety rules and helicopter operation, which led to the tragedy.
