Orbán’s “peace tour” to Moscow and Beijing in the first weeks of Hungary’s presidency of the EU Council seriously angered the allies. Then the prime minister wrote a letter to Charles Michel to explain his “diplomatic voyage.” Previously, the contents of Orban’s letter were retold in the media, and now he himself decided to publish it.

As Bild journalists previously reported, the text of the letter really confirms , that Orban went to Moscow to restore direct diplomatic contacts with it.

“Orban's peace mission”

On July 18, the text of Viktor Orbán’s letter to Charles Michel appeared on the official portal of the Hungarian government.

Since fragments of my report to the President of the European Council about my peace mission became known, I decided to disclose the entire document – for clarity and context,” the Hungarian Prime Minister noted on the social network “X” and added a link to his scandalous letter.

So, in it, Orbán proposes to initiate a discussion of the following proposals:

  • holding high-level political negotiations with China on ways to peace conference;
  • while maintaining current high-level political contacts with Ukraine, reopen direct lines of diplomatic communication with Russia and rehabilitate such direct contacts in our political communication;
  • launching a coordinated political offensive in the Global South, whose gratitude the EU allegedly lost due to its position on the war in Ukraine, which led to the global isolation of the transatlantic community.

It is known that Charles Michel responded rather harshly to Orban’s letter.

Recall that Ursula von der Lein, newly elected President of the European Commission, went after Orban because of his unauthorized “foreign trips.” President Zelensky also reacted to the Hungarian Prime Minister’s trip to Russia.
