Russian border guards left the Yerevan airport “Zvartnots”, where they had been located since 1992.

Earlier, the Armenian authorities gave Moscow 4 months for such events. This was stated in a report by analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

They note that on this occasion, the Armenians held a farewell ceremony and officially confirmed the withdrawal of Russian representatives with a protocol

“In March 2024, the Armenian authorities asked Russia to withdraw its border guards from the airport by August 1, sinceArmenia can carry out its own border control without the help of Russian border guards, who have been stationed at the airport since 1992,” the ISW noted.

An official farewell ceremony was held at Zvartnots, and representatives of Russia and Armenia signed a protocol on the transfer of state border protection at the airport to the Armenian side.

What preceded this

  • In early March, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted that Armenian border guards had sent a letter to Russian border troops in Armenia, emphasizing that they had acquired sufficient experience, skills, and capabilities to carry out border control in Zvartnots without the help of the Russian side.
  • This agreement was confirmed at a meeting in May between Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. At the same time, it became known that Russian troops were withdrawing from a number of regions of Armenia, but they will still remain on the border of Armenia with Turkey and Iran.
