Kamala Harris' team has begun placing ads supporting Ukraine in key states. This ad is aimed at Americans who have roots in Eastern Europe.

Politico journalists note that foreign policy often takes a back seat during US elections, as voters worry about issues such as the economy, inflation and immigration. However, this time the context of events in the world is completely different.

How and Why Harris Is Running Ads Supporting Ukraine

In an attempt to boost support in key election states, the Democratic arm of the America's Future Majority Fund super PAC has launched a new advertising campaign targeting Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, which are typically swing states.

These states are home to large populations with roots in Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania and other Eastern European countries, making them critical to the party's strategy ahead of the upcoming elections.

During Tuesday's presidential debate, Harris addressed 800 Americans with Polish roots in Pennsylvania directly, arguing that Poland would be Russia's next target after Ukraine.

If Donald Trump were president, Putin would be sitting in Kyiv right now, Harris said.

The Trump campaign rejected that narrative, saying the Republican nominee “will do whatever it takes to restore peace, American strength, and deterrence on the world stage.”

As the publication notes, Harris's team wants to tie her campaign to communities for whom the war in Ukraine has more personal meaning. The candidate also wants to convince residents of these states that Trump will abandon Ukraine and NATO's eastern flank allies.

A new poll by the libertarian research institute CATO and YouGov found that voters in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan narrowly believe Trump is likely to end the war in Ukraine and keep the United States out of the conflict.

According to Politico, Pennsylvania is home to more than 700,000 people of Polish descent and about 122,000 of Ukrainian descent. Michigan has a Polish-American population of about 900,000, and about 40,000 of Ukrainian descent. Wisconsin is also home to a sizable Polish-American community, numbering approximately 480,000.

In the 2020 presidential election, President Biden won these key states, defeating former President Trump by 80,000 votes in Pennsylvania, 154,000 votes in Michigan, and 20,000 votes in Wisconsin.
