UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres took part in the BRICS summit in Kazan, where he met with war criminal Vladimir Putin and even shook his hand. In fact, with his trip to Russia, Guterres was trying to justify the existence of the United Nations.

Political scientist Oleg Saakyan expressed this opinion to Channel 24, noting that the UN has no constructive place in the Russian-Ukrainian war, which is the largest conflict of our time. Moreover, the weaknesses of this structure create additional problems.

Why did the UN Secretary General go to the BRICS summit

The political scientist believes that by visiting the BRICS summit in Kazan, Guterres set fire to the branch he himself was sitting on. However, no one from the expert community was surprised by such a visit. After all, the dead cannot die. This applies to both the UN and Guterres himself.

The Secretary General of the United Nations refused to participate in the Global Peace Summit, which took place in June 2024, because there he would have to listen to everything in which the UN is incapable and legitimize the discussion that it is an absolutely impotent structure. Instead, Guterres went to the BRICS summit.

This is an opportunity to meet, shake hands with Putin and then say with a proud expression that Guterres is the one who is ready to do the dirty work, – noted Sahakyan.

It is extremely important that Volodymyr Zelensky refused to allow Guterres to visit Ukraine because of his participation in the BRICS summit, so as not to legitimize the legend that the UN Secretary General is allegedly a mediator and can be part of the peace process. At the same time, the representative of the UN Secretary General denies exactly this context of this thesis.

“Although it could be said directly that while Guterres' suit is still stained with Ukrainian blood after his trip to Kazan, and crumbs from the Kazan flatbread are still on his beardless face, Kiev will not be happy about his visit,” the political scientist said.

What is Guterres' real position

During his stay at the BRICS summit, the UN Secretary General gave a speech in which he called for peace in Ukraine, in accordance with the UN Charter. However, he did not name the party responsible for the war.

According to the political scientist, Guterres wants to be a mediator, but will not call a spade a spade, but will only use neutral rhetoric, which is part of the Western diplomatic school. However, he should use the UN General Assembly resolution, which clearly states who is the aggressor and who is the victim, and on whose side the UN Charter stands.

However, he has pro-Chinese views, so the rhetoric and terminology he uses will depend on what it is in the so-called Chinese-Brazilian peace plan, Sahakyan noted.

According to him, Guterres took part in the BRICS summit not without China's desire to do so. After all, China was the one who gathered everyone, and it was Chinese ideas and interests that formed the basis of the final communiqué. Russia managed to get nothing but a picture.
