Greece criticized German plans to supply arms to Ukraine/Collage of Channel 24
Germany breaks records for promises to supply weapons to Ukraine and their failure to fulfill. In Greece, which is supposed to transfer BMPs to Ukraine in exchange for German ones, they are surprised at the length of Scholz's plans.
Sources in the Greek government told the media that the first German tanks in Greece are expected to be seen no earlier than in 2 months . When the Ukrainians will receive Greek armored vehicles, no one undertakes to predict.
The Germans refuse to supply their tanks to Ukraine directly
The German government had previously refused to supply its tanks directly to Ukraine. Therefore, the scheme is as follows: the Germans transfer their modern tanks to NATO or the EU countries, and they transfer their own – older models for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to this plan, Athens was supposed to transfer the BMP-1 to Kyiv. However, for this, a special committee of Greece must inspect the Marder tanks in Germany. Then they should be delivered to Greek territory, and after that the military equipment will go to Ukraine.
The Greek representatives have not yet examined the German tanks
The process got stuck at the first stage. Athens still hasn't received an invitation for a commission to visit Germany.
When Ukraine should get tanks – when will the war end? – said a representative of the Greek Ministry of Defense.
The former head of the Ministry of Defense also commented, who called the complex plan of Chancellor Scholz “a circus and a mockery of both Ukraine and Greece.”
The epic with provision of weapons from Germany
- The media writes that Chancellor Scholz does not want to provide heavy weapons to Ukraine, because he fears that they will be used on Russian territory.
- Under the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnik said that Ukraine would be able to receive weapons from the Germans at the end of June. At the same time, he noted that during the 100 days of the war, Berlin did not provide Ukraine with a single piece of heavy weapons.
- German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht rejected accusations that Berlin was delaying the supply of weapons and assured that Ukraine would be helped in the long term.
