Newly elected US President Donald Trump will demand that NATO member countries increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. These are colossal figures for European countries.

However, this will make the Alliance significantly more powerful. This opinion was voiced to Channel 24 by political scientist, president of the analytical center “Politics” Oleg Lesnoy.

“Whether he has the goal of training Europe or not, he is training it. This is the main thing for us. Because, for example, his statement about 5% of the GDP of NATO member states is a colossal figure. If you take Germany, they were shocked,” he said.

After all, 5% of GDP is a huge amount of money for this country. German experts explain that they cannot afford to give away such a sum at once. But this makes NATO powerful. During his previous term, Trump already made similar statements regarding the Alliance.

He says 5%, but as a result, the overall temperature will be 3%. But for everyone, because some NATO member countries are already doing this, and some are doing nothing at all. But this makes NATO more powerful if everyone at least reaches the 3% mark. Therefore, there are more advantages for us here, the political scientist emphasized.

Oleg Lesnoy noted that Russia's war against Ukraine has affected the entire world. Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin has questioned the inviolability of borders. That is why many are now trying to take advantage of the opportunities that have arisen. In particular, Donald Trump announced the annexation of Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal.

That is why when they say that the war is taking place exclusively in Ukraine, that it is a local conflict, then no. It has already ceased to be even continental. It is already global, has consequences for everything that happens in this world, or almost everything, – he emphasized.

Recall that in his Christmas greetings, Trump spoke about the Panama Canal, which is allegedly “illegally exploited by the wonderful soldiers of China.” He also mentioned his idea of ​​​​incorporating Canada into the United States as the 51st state and promised Canadians a significant reduction in taxes. In addition, the newly elected American leader emphasized the strategic importance of Greenland for US national security. According to him, local residents allegedly want to see an American presence on the island.
