Germany is starting construction of LNG terminals to get rid of Russian imports in the future. The work is carried out in Wilhelmshaven – a port in Lower Saxony

Germany is trying to speed up the construction of the terminal. This will allow importing LNG from around the world, in particular from the USA.

The terminal is planned to be built in 10 months.

We have a good chance to do what was not possible in Germany: to build an LNG terminal in about 10 months and connect it to the German gas supply,” said German Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Haback.

As early as last month, the Vice Chancellor called for unprecedented measures to make rapid progress on Russia's energy cutoff. He noted that Berlin must counteract the Kremlin's energy blackmail.

The German Ministry of Economy hopes that alternative solutions can be implemented by reducing the use of coal and natural gas.

Yermak called Germany's step very important

Andriy Yermak, head of the President's Office, said in a telegram that the Germans are taking important steps to reduce gas imports. We are talking about obtaining two floating LNG import terminals and starting their operation by the end of 2022.

Höegh LNG has signed binding agreements with the German government. According to these documents, there will be a charter of two floating storage and regasification units (FSRU) to operate in Germany for 10 years. Each of these vessels can receive up to 170 thousand cubic meters of liquefied gas through tankers – this is for one unloading. Immediately on board, the LNG will be converted to a gaseous state and fed into the network.

The Kremlin's energy blackmail: latest news

  • According to the adviser to the Minister of Energy Lana Zerkal, Russia is not able to block ” gas valve” to Europe, because gas production is large, and there are not so many underground storage facilities for its injection.
  • Bloomberg suggested that Europe could replace Russian gas with African gas. This will reduce dependence by two-thirds this year.
  • Germany has already reported that the EU plans to stop importing coal from Russia in the summer and Russian oil before the end of the year.
