Germany repaired BMP Marder for Ukraine, but cannot transfer them

Germany is ready to hand over repaired Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine. However, the transfer of combat vehicles is blocked by the federal government.

The federal government does not issue a license

The German company Rheinmetall restored 16 combat vehicles at its own expense infantry vehicles Marder for Ukraine. However, the federal government does not issue a license for their export to Ukraine.

Despite the fact that official Berlin does not issue a license, Rheinmetall continues to restore another 14 Marder infantry fighting vehicles. These combat vehicles can be handed over to the Ukrainian military.

In total, specialists can repair about 70 units of such equipment from old stocks.

Military assistance from Germany: what is known

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany would not act independently in matters of military assistance to Ukraine. This is how the German chancellor explained that his country did not provide tanks to Ukraine.

Scholz noted that Germany, in the context of military assistance to Ukraine, will focus on air defense systems and artillery.

At the same time, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba stressed that Kyiv is expecting German “Leopards” and “Marders”.

Ukraine has also been waiting for a long time from Germany to supply IRIS-T air defense systems. Germany promises to transfer 4 modern IRIS-T air defense systems to Ukraine. Two units should arrive in Ukraine before the end of 2022.
