The German Ministry of Defense rejected the proposal of the Bundestag deputies to supply Ukraine with more weapons. Previously, politicians from the coalition German parties called for additional supplies of weapons to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, even if this could temporarily weaken the Bundeswehr.
The refusal to provide additional assistance to Ukraine was announced by the official representative of the German Ministry of Defense.
He added that Germany really should be prepared for Putin to take advantage of any weakness and even a temporary gap in NATO's defense readiness. The representative of the German Ministry of Defense recalled that Germany should provide its partners in the Alliance with “support within the framework of obligations”, as provided for in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
During the Cold War, we would probably not understand if our allies had reduced collective defense due to the situation in different theaters of war – and there were such in the world, – added a representative of the German military department.
Position deputies of the Bundestag
Coalition German deputies called for additional arms supplies to Ukraine. At the same time, they assure that this should be done even if the Bundeswehr is temporarily weakened. This article was published in the German media by members of the Bundestag Christian Klink, Sarah Nanni and Alexander Müller.
“We feel it is our duty to support Kyiv’s struggle for survival because Ukraine also defends our interests and values. Russia’s aggressive war is a turning point and requires new ways to defend our goal of a rules-based world order ruled by the rule of law and not the law of the strongest,” MPs say.
Security politicians say they are pursuing a long-term plan to continue supplying weapons systems. It also includes:
- < li> training,
- ammunition,
- technical support.
To do this, they want to harmonize the approach with partner countries and the military industry. They assure that the new equipment for the Bundeswehr, the allies and Ukraine should arrive quickly.
Earlier, the German media reported that in the past ten weeks the German government has ignored Ukraine's requests for additional arms supplies. At the end of July, it became known that Germany began supplying Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery systems to Ukraine.
