German opposition leader wants to make a “deal” with Trump Diana Kwasniewska

The leader of the German opposition said that he will seek to conclude an agreement with the elected US President Donald Trump. In this way, the politician seeks to increase Germany's international authority.

24 Channel writes, citing Bloomberg, that German opposition leader Friedrich Merz called German Chancellor Olaf Scholz a “lame duck.” He called on him to speed up the timing of early federal elections following the collapse of the three-party coalition government last week.

What is known about Merz's statement

In Germany, we have never really articulated and defended our interests well enough, and we need to change that, said Friedrich Merz.

He also said the Americans were much more aggressive.

“This should not end with only one side benefiting, but rather with us reaching agreements that are beneficial for both sides. Trump would call that a deal,” the opposition leader noted.

Merz blames Scholz for US elections

The leader of the Christian Democratic Union party accused Scholz's center-left government of being misled by Trump's re-election after he supported Democratic candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Trump has a good memory. The current federal government will no longer be heard by the new administration. Scholz is now a lame duck internationally,” said Friedrich Merz.

He named the supply of American military aircraft as an example of a potential deal with Trump. The leader of the Christian Democratic Union said that Berlin had agreed to buy F-35 fighters from the United States, so they should be serviced in Germany with American support. Merz noted that this would be beneficial for both sides.
