The leader of the opposition Christian Democratic Union and candidate for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made an important clarification regarding his position on providing Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles.

Unlike Scholz, he has repeatedly stated that he would give such permission if he takes the post of Chancellor, but now he has named an important nuance. This was reported by 24 Kanal with reference to N-TV.

What is Merz's position on Taurus

The candidate for the post of German Chancellor, after a series of statements about providing Ukraine with Taurus, clarified that he will make a decision on the supply of long-range missiles only after consulting with Washington and European allies. Merz also doubts that they will be able to significantly change the situation on the front.

According to him, the training of Ukrainian military personnel to accustom them to how to properly work with the above-mentioned type of missiles will last at least 4 months. During this time, the post of President of the United States will already be taken by Donald Trump, who won the election and whose inauguration will take place in January 2025.

Therefore, I am in favor of answering these questions together with the Americans. Not alone, not in Germany, but together with Europe and America, – said Friedrich Merz.

Recall that during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on December 9, he said that he was ready to facilitate the transfer of long-range weapons to Ukraine, noting that he was working to create unity among German politicians in support of Kyiv, despite the current differences of opinion.
