Georgia will never become EU member if Saakashvili dies in prison – MEP

Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili is in serious condition in prison. The country will never become a member of the EU if he dies.

Briefly about Saakashvili's condition

Since his arrest on October 1 last year, Saakashvili has lost more than 42 kilograms. An independent examination announced 20 diagnoses, including cachexia – weight loss that threatens life. Also, increased doses of barium, bismuth and mercury were found in his body.

The Georgian authorities do not recognize Saakashvili's serious condition. Representatives of the leading party and the government claim that the ex-president is faking and harming himself in order to achieve freedom.

Saakashvili's lawyers have filed a petition for a reprieve and dismissal of the politician for health reasons. The process of the third attempt began in the Tbilisi City Court on December 22.

Doctors did not give permission for Saakashvili's transportation. Therefore, he took part in the meeting remotely. After a while, the defense stated that the ex-president needed the help of doctors and the connection was interrupted.
