G7 diplomats are concerned about the threat posed by the seizure of Ukrainian nuclear facilities. Such actions by the aggressor state increase the risk of a nuclear accident. This is a danger not only for the population of Ukraine, but also for neighboring states and the international community.
Occupiers must give access to the IAEA
It also undermines the IAEA's ability to monitor Ukraine's peaceful nuclear activities. They noted the importance of assisting the mission of IAEA experts at the Zaporozhye NPP. Diplomats agree with the seven pillars of nuclear security outlined by Director General Grossi.
Therefore, IAEA staff must have safe and unhindered access to all nuclear installations in Ukraine. They must communicate with Ukrainian personnel without pressure on the invaders.
In addition, the ministers once again condemned Russia's unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine. They added that Russia should immediately withdraw its troops.
The shelling of the ZNPP: what is known
- On August 5, the invaders opened fire twice in the direction of the ZNPP. There were 3 “arrivals” near the industrial site and three strikes directly on the station site near one of the power units. There is a nuclear reactor nearby.
- On August 6, the occupiers again fired at the ZNPP. They could hit containers of spent nuclear fuel.
- Ukraine called on the international organizations of the IAEA and the UN to send a special mission to the station.
- Moreover, the Russian military replaced some sections of the ZNPP. They threaten to blow up the station if they lose control of it.
