Friends from the “Big Seven” simply “swallowed” what was put on the table for them – Ambassador on the G20 summit Irina Martsiyash

Brazil chairs the Group of Twenty and hosted the corresponding summit this year. Ukrainian Ambassador Andriy Melnyk commented on the final declaration of the G20 summit.

The diplomat noted “regression and rollback” in the current joint statement of the summit. He said this in an interview with Radio Liberty, Channel 24 reports.

Results of the G20 summit

The final declaration of the G20 summit does not contain a direct condemnation of the Russian invasion, which was a significant disappointment for Kyiv.

The Ukrainian Ambassador to Brazil noted that if we compare this declaration with the one that was last year in New Delhi, then a significant regression and rollback is noticeable. And this trend, according to him, is very alarming.

“We are not only talking about Ukraine. We are talking here about the competition of these new states, which (I mean the Global South, in particular Brazil, which sees itself as one of the leaders of this movement) have thrown down a real challenge to the Western world. These states, which are gaining weight primarily economically, but, as we see now, also geopolitically, are creating a parallel world, a parallel reality to what we know. And this is the biggest challenge,” he said.

Melnyk noted that he was offended that partners in the West – the “Big Seven” – which he noted, either do not see this (but he believes they see it perfectly well), or do not want to admit it.

“Because, to admit it, we need to change our approaches completely. We didn't see that in Rio. Again: it's a big blow for us. Without any exaggeration,” he noted.

Those who had warnings there, some of our friends, individual, let's say, friends from the “Big Seven” simply “swallowed” what was put on the table for them. I was there – I talked, in particular, with journalists who had access and told how everything was happening there – behind the scenes. They themselves did not know what to say, – Melnik added.
