Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, millions of Ukrainian children have found themselves abroad. The countries hosting Ukrainians are trying to create comfortable conditions for children to continue their education.

For Ukrainians abroad, there are several options for how their children will study. More about this in the material of the channel 24 website.

What options exist

  • First option – continue distance learning in Ukrainian schools. Every Ukrainian child has the right to join distance learning at any school in Ukraine. Only a statement is needed.
  • Second option– education in local schools. It is free of charge, moreover, in most EU countries it is mandatory. The main issue is adaptation and overcoming the language barrier. And if very young children quickly master a new language, then for teenagers this can become a problem, even a psychological one.

To solve the language issue, in many countries teachers from Ukraine or with knowledge of Ukrainian are actively employed, so there is a possibility that your child in conditional Bavaria will be taught by a teacher from his own school. In addition to Germany, Ukrainian classes are being actively created in local schools in Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, etc. “- there children are taught German in intensive programs so that they adapt faster. Similar programs operate in Poland, Romania and other countries that help Ukrainians.

  • Third option– schools of local Ukrainian communities. There are Ukrainian schools in most European countries, there are not very many against them, and not everyone has enough space for them. In addition, for the most part these are the so-called “Saturday schools” and they are far from always able to completely “close” the curriculum (although they have the right to issue report cards, certificates and state-recognized certificates of Ukraine).

Textbooks and stationery

Secondary education in Europe is free of charge, but parents still face expenses. These are textbooks and stationery (they are quite expensive and the total cost can be several hundred euros).

The Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science is currently negotiating with refugee-hosting countries to provide all Ukrainian schoolchildren with free access to electronic versions of textbooks. It is known that Austria, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia; Poland; Czech; Sweden and Switzerland have already done this. It is expected that other countries will follow suit.

And if you can save money with textbooks thanks to their electronic versions, then it will not work with the office.

Unfortunately, for many refugees from Ukraine, such expenses can be considered critical. This is well understood by local officials and actively go forward. For example, in France, children from Ukraine are provided with textbooks and school supplies free of charge. Also, local authorities take over the financing of children's meals in schools (this is also a rather big amount).

In Romania, children of Ukrainian refugees are provided with school uniforms, textbooks and stationery free of charge, they finance accommodation in boarding schools, and subsidies for school meals.

At the same time, unlike most European countries, the official status of a refugee or a temporarily displaced person, without which, for example, you cannot send your child to school in Turkey, was made optional for Ukrainians in Romania.

There will be help!

Decisions on assistance to Ukrainian schoolchildren can be made by individual municipalities. There are also many charitable and religious organizations that take care of Ukrainian children and help them with textbooks and the necessary school stationery, computers and gadgets necessary for the educational process.

An important role is played by private philanthropists, as well as the administrations of educational institutions, actively reaching out towards the children of Ukrainian refugees.

In a difficult time for Ukraine, people around the world united to help us and our children, where – at the expense of their own well-being. Ukrainians appreciate this and will be grateful from time immemorial.
