The former king of Spain Juan Carlos I fled the country amid charges of corruption. It is reported by El Mundo.
Representatives of the former monarch announced that it will be available for the prosecution of Spain, the government approved his decision. According to RIA Novosti, the monarch is already in the Dominican Republic. Presumably, this is not the end point of his route, and Juan Carlos can go to New Zealand: one of the statements a few years ago he said he would have emigrated there.
The Prosecutor’s office is conducting the investigation related to the foreign accounts allegedly controlled by the Juan Carlos I, they thus decorated on straw men. According to the Spanish Constitution, the king has immunity, which it can’t prosecute, however the monarch can be tried for acts committed after the abdication from the throne.
So, in the spring of 2020, the Swiss prosecutors began an investigation against € 65 million which the former monarch gave his girlfriend Corinna Sayn-Wittgenstein. In addition, the Prosecutor’s office in Spain deals with the case of embezzlement of money in the construction of a railway in Saudi Arabia. Then to an offshore account, which, presumably, belonged to Juan Carlos, has received $ 100 million.
In the spring of 2020, the son of Juan Carlos, current king of Spain Felipe VI, refused the inheritance of his father. This was due to a corruption scandal. Simultaneously with the rejection of the inheritance Felipe was deprived of the father’s regular cash benefits.
Juan Carlos I was king for 39 years, since 1975. In 2014, monarch had to retire due to deteriorating health and a tarnished reputation. One of the reasons both were unsuccessful hunt for elephants in 2012, which Juan Carlos received a severe injury. The public was outraged that in the midst of economic crisis, the king allows himself to such entertainment. He abdicated in favor of his son.
