Italy’s Senate is allowed to conduct the case against the former Deputy Prime Minister and interior Minister Matteo Salvini. He will be tried for refusing to let migrants in August 2019, reports BBC News.

Salvini, leader of the right-wing party “Northern League”, accused of illegal detention of more than 100 people came from North Africa during the 19 days we were on the ship, which is not allowed to drop off passengers at the port of Lampedusa.

For this policy could face up to 15 years in prison. It is noted that it goes against the investigation of another similar case. Such rescue ships taking migrants to Europe, over the last few years repeatedly stuck to Italian shores, and Salvini personally responsible for at least one case of detention of a ship with illegal immigrants on Board.

“To protect Italy is not a crime. I am proud of this thing, I would do it again,” Salvini responded to the news of the new trial.

In June of 2018 the Italian government has banned the rescue ships to help boat refugees in the Mediterranean sea, even if they send distress signals. Great attention was then drawn to the ship Aquarius. There were 629 of asylum seekers, among them 120 minors, but Salvini has forbidden the port of Sicily to accept it. In the end, Spain was opened to refugees in the port of Valencia.

Migration crisis broke out in Europe in 2015. According to the International organization for migration (IOM), in 2017 Italy received the largest number of refugees who arrived by sea, with more than 119 thousand people.
