First Estonia, now Malta: Russia blocks appointment of OSCE chairman for 2024

by alex

Russia is blocking the election of Malta as chairman during a meeting of representatives of member countries of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna.

As Radio Liberty journalist Rikard Jozwiak reported, the OSCE is trying to choose a state that will chair in 2024.

According to the journalist, the Russian delegation blocked the appointment of Malta as the chairing state of the OSCE, as well as four top officials of the organization, including the Secretary General.

In the Organization, decisions are made by consensus, so Russia uses this mechanism to blackmail the OSCE.

“They (Russians, – Ed .) want (Russian Foreign Minister Sergei, – Ed .) Lavrov to be accepted next week in North Macedonia at the OSCE ministerial meeting (in order, – Ed .) to make a final decision,” he added .

It is noteworthy that before this, Russia and Belarus vetoed Estonia’s confirmation as the next OSCE chairman in 2024.

Because of such actions, delegations from Moscow and Minsk were asked to transfer the chairmanship to Malta, which positions itself as a neutral state, although it condemned Russian aggression and, as an EU member, joined sanctions against Russia.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba previously proposed to “kick him out the door” from the OSCE and Europe as a whole. In his opinion, only the exclusion of Russia can save the OSCE from collapse.
