Fireworks mortars and gasoline canisters were found in the back of the Tesla Cybertruck pickup truck that exploded in the parking lot of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. Elon Musk previously reported that this was the cause of the explosion.

What is known about the causes of the Tesla Cybertruck explosion

According to the Associated Press, the explosion was caused by explosive devices placed in the back of the rented car. The walls of the car body remained undamaged, because the blast wave was directed upward.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously stated that the explosion was caused by “a very large firework and/or bomb that was transported in the back of the rented Cybertruck and was not related to the vehicle itself.”

Las Vegas Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill said that video footage from Tesla charging stations made it possible to track the route of the pickup truck. The car arrived in Las Vegas at 7:30 a.m., and an hour later pulled into a hotel parking lot, where it exploded 15-20 seconds after stopping.

Law enforcement officers have already identified the person who rented the vehicle through the Turo app in Colorado. However, the name has not yet been released, as the investigation is ongoing to determine whether this person was in the pickup truck at the time of the explosion. It is also not yet possible to say for sure whether this was an act of terrorism.

Neither Donald Trump nor Elon Musk were in Las Vegas at the time of the incident. Both were at a New Year's party at Trump's estate in Florida.
