Head of a research organization, which has been tracking weapons used in attacks against Ukraine since 2018, told the UN Security Council on Friday there was “indisputable” evidence that ballistic missile remnants discovered in Ukraine came from North Korea.< /p>

Evidence of Russia's Use of Missiles from North Korea

During a Security Council meeting, the United States and its Western allies said that Russia and North Korea had violated the UN embargo on arms exports from North Korea.

Conflict Armament Research Executive Director Jonah Leff provided the board with a detailed analysis of the remnants of the missile that struck Kharkov on January 2.

He noted that the organization documented the missile's engine, its tail section and nearly 300 components produced by 26 companies from eight countries, and determined that it was either a KN-23 or KN-24 missile manufactured in 2023 in North Korea.< /p>

The organization came to this conclusion based on the unique characteristics of the rocket – its diameter, the various blade drives that control the thrust and trajectory of the rocket, the pattern around the igniter, the presence of Korean characters on some components of the rocket, as well as other marks and components dating back to an earlier period before 2023,” the expert said.

The expert noted that after the initial documentation, their teams tested three more identical North Korean missiles that hit Kiev and Zaporozhye earlier this year.

They also spotted additional conventional weapons, including an artillery shell from 1977 that was captured on the front line and had not previously been seen on the Ukrainian battlefield.

The Council discussed illegal arms shipments from North Korea at the request of France, Japan, South Korea, Great Britain and the United States.

Izumi Nakamitsu, Chairman The UN Disarmament Affairs Committee told the Council on Friday that before its mandate expired, a panel of experts was reviewing Ukraine's report on missile debris it had discovered “following information about short-range ballistic missiles produced in the DPRK and used by Russian military forces in Ukraine.”

The publication added that although the mandate of the experts, extended since 2009, was suspended through Russia's efforts, Namitsu said that the Security Council committee responsible for monitoring the implementation of sanctions against the DPRK, ” continues its work and will monitor compliance with the sanctions regime. According to him, in addition to the dozens of missiles handed over to Russia by North Korea, it also illegally transported more than 11 thousand containers of ammunition.
