Even Orban did not support him: what are Fico's hidden motives regarding blackmailing Ukraine Melania Golembyovska

Due to the termination of Russian gas transit, Robert Fico threatens to reduce aid to Ukrainian refugees and stop exporting electricity to our country. Fico “plays the game” alone through motives that benefit only certain people in his country.

Political scientist Oleg Saakyan expressed this opinion to Channel 24, noting that Russian gas brought huge “gray” money to certain people. Now Fico must find a way to “thank” them in the future.

Fico's Hidden Motives for Blackmailing Ukraine

Fico may indeed try to harm Ukraine, but he will be without an ally in this matter. All of Europe and even Viktor Orban have “disowned” him with their silence, because Fico's position is marginal.

Europe has demonstrated that there are alternative ways to obtain gas. This is not a question of energy or national security. The amount of Russian gas that goes to Slovakia is 4 times more than Slovakia itself consumes. It's a question of earnings and exports, – explained Saakyan.

Howeverthe most important thing is that thanks to the transit of Russian gas, the people who stand behind Fico and sponsor his political career received huge amounts of money, which they can now lose.

Therefore, Fico needs to receive at least some compensation to give these people the opportunity to earn money on something else and to demonstrate that he “fought for their interests to the last.”

Interesting!Despite the prime minister's threats, the Slovak company SEPS assured that it will continue to supply electricity to Ukraine under the terms of the current contract.

He added that by threatening Ukrainian refugees, Fico is making them hostages of his policies. However, this is not a strong lever of influence on Ukraine, since citizens can move to other European countries where they will receive support.

By the way, political scientist from Slovakia Alexander Duleba expressed the opinion that Ukraine should wait out the “hysteria” of Fico, who listens to Russian propaganda.
