According to eyewitnesses, “Voraghina” had been dormant for four years. However, on Sunday, August 4, Sicily was shaken by powerful explosions. After that, the volcano ejected ash, smoke, and a large number of pieces of hot rock.

A new surge in Etna's volcanic activity caused intense ash fall in the Catania region of Sicily. The ash literally covered the city, forming a layer several centimeters thick.

Due to the eruption, pilots received an orange warning that ash plumes jeopardized the safety of the aircraft. However, experts reassure by asserting that there are no threats and the nearest international airport, Fontanarossa, is operating as usual.

“More than 10 video stations were located around the volcano. Workers at the Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology observed an increase in the tremor of magma channels for three weeks. Magma erupts through a relatively new crater: it was discovered only at the beginning of 2015. The cracks around it reach temperatures of 600 degrees,” writes La Repubblica.
