In addition, part of the container terminal will be converted for military purposes to ensure the safe loading of ammunition from one ship to another.

The port of Rotterdam, which is considered the largest in Europe, has received weapons before, but even at the height of the Cold War it did not have a special berth for this.

Port director Boudewijn Simons said logistics for military supplies would be coordinated with the port of Antwerp in neighbouring Belgium, particularly when receiving cargo from the US, UK and Canada.

“We see each other as competitors less and less. Of course, we compete where necessary, but we work together where we can,” he noted.

According to the director, if large volumes of weapons need to be transported, Rotterdam will turn to Antwerp or other ports to take on some of the load, and vice versa.
