Europe was preparing, but Slovakia was not: what does Fico's position mean Petro Sineoky

The Prime Minister of Slovakia was furious about Ukraine's decision to stop the transit of Russian gas. He could have prepared for this, but he did nothing.

Political scientist Taras Semenyuk told 24 Kanal about this, noting that Fico might want to raise the problem of Russian gas transit to the global level. But the European Union will not let him do this.

Why Fico wants Russian gas

As Semenyuk noted, cheap Russian gas is a lifeline for Fico's regime. It is clear that all this has its political price.

The EU countries were looking for alternatives to Russian gas in advance. Fico thought that he would be able to negotiate for the transit of Russian gas to continue in the future. But this did not happen.

He thought that he would be able to put pressure on Ukraine. This did not happen. And now his regime is unstable. And the opposition leader of Slovakia has also arrived in Kyiv. It is known that Fico's position in Slovakia is quite unstable. There, the coalition is “shaky” with 3-5 votes, Semenyuk said.

The future of Fico's regime literally depends on these few votes. Therefore, it may well happen that after some time the country will be headed by a pro-European candidate.

Fico will try to hold on to the regime, but is unlikely to be able to increase support. The country is dependent on cheap energy resources. Fico will be forced to raise tariffs for heating and electricity. Alternative ways should have been sought earlier. When you go to the market now, it is clear that prices will be high, – Semenyuk emphasized.

Recall that President Volodymyr Zelensky reproached Robert Fico for not seeking energy independence from Russia.
