Europe looking for way to gently push Ukraine into peace talks with Russia – WSJ

France, Germany and the UK are considering closer ties between Ukraine and NATO to encourage Kiev to start peace talks with Moscow.

This is written in The Wall Street Journal, referring to anonymous representatives of the governments of the three countries. At the same time, any decision on when and under what conditions these negotiations will begin should be made by Kyiv.

It is noted that last week, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak unveiled a plan for an agreement to provide Ukraine with greater access to modern military equipment, weapons and ammunition in order to protect itself after the end of the war.

Thus, a year after the start full-scale invasion, Paris and Berlin also support this initiative, they see it as an opportunity to increase confidence in Ukraine and give the government an incentive to start negotiations with Russia.

Another goal of the proposed arrangement is to influence Russia. If the Kremlin sees that the West is ready to expand military assistance to Ukraine in the future, this should convince them that it will not be able to achieve its military goals.

Officials noted that any decision on when and under what conditions peace negotiations will begin , completely depends on Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that he needed to start considering peace talks with Moscow.

This happened during a meeting of the three leaders in Paris earlier this year, according to the WSJ. of the month: sources familiar with the conversation said.
