During the European Union summit On December 14–15, the leaders of the countries decided to begin negotiations with Ukraine on accession to the EU. This proposal was supported by all those present. Before the vote, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban left the hall.

It should be noted how well European leadership, in particular some politicians, showed. Political scientist Nikolai Davidyuk spoke about this 24 Channel, adding that they are talking about German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte, who on the eve of the summit even said he was ready to talk seriously with Orban.

Europe showed unity

Also important is the role of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, who has done an extremely large job. Consequently, on a crucial day, we all saw the strength of Europe.

Europe showed that it can be united and is ready to confront Vladimir Putin. It was very pleasant to see such good work, in the center of which Ukraine was, – emphasized Nikolai Davidyuk.

From the point of view of the level of political consciousness and culture, European leaders demonstrated the maximum. If we continue to move at this pace, then there is a chance to hope that we will be able to join the EU much faster than predicted today.

During the summit, Viktor Orban expectedly threatened that he would block the decision on Ukraine’s membership, as well as the allocation of assistance to our state. However, he was told that he should wait until the summit in January 2024, and then EU leaders will do everything possible to ensure that Ukraine receives the money.

“Hungary is not the center of the EU. The center is leadership, unity and large economies. Hungary is definitely not famous for its large economy. Moreover, this was not Orban’s game with the European Union. It was Putin who showed such things with the help of Orban. Therefore, I really want to say “thank you”, because we saw a very powerful political unity,” Davidyuk emphasized.

Negotiations on EU membership began with Ukraine

  • The European Council supported the start of negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on accession to the European Union. During the voting for this decision, the Hungarian Prime Minister left the voting hall. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that he suggested that the Hungarian politician take time to rest and go out for coffee. This allowed the remaining member countries to make a historic decision.
  • The European Union during the meeting did not decide on the allocation of aid to Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros. Hungary became the only country that did not agree to include assistance to Ukraine in the EU budget. However, they should return to reviewing this issue in January 2024.
  • Ukraine has already responded to the EU vote. Vladimir Zelensky called it a victory not only for our country, but for the whole of Europe. Prime Minister Denis Shmigal noted that today history is being made before our eyes. He added that a difficult path lies ahead, but at the same time, with this decision, the European Union also highly appreciated the reforms that Ukraine has implemented in recent years.
