The European Union plans to give member countries powers to ban companies in Russia and Belarus from accessing European pipelines and LNG terminals.
The Financial Times reports this.
The material states that any country that is a member of the EU will be able to prohibit companies from the Russian Federation and Belarus from buying capacity in its gas pipelines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, according to a draft legislative document proposed by Brussels.

The EU wants to withdraw from contracts with Russian gas suppliers
The Financial Times, citing a senior bloc official, said the proposal could be the basis for EU energy companies to exit contracts with Russian gas suppliers without having to pay significant compensation.
— Although the 27-member bloc has gradually reduced its dependence on Russian energy since the February 2022 invasion, it still gets about a tenth of its gas, including LNG supplies, from the country. Several member countries, including Austria and Hungary, still rely heavily on Russian supplies, — the message says.
In addition, EU countries will be allowed to “partially or, if justified, completely restrict” access to the infrastructure of gas operators from Russia and Belarus, “if necessary to protect their essential security interests”.
So the European Commission wants to push member countries to stop importing the remaining gas.
It is noted that according to Eurostat, in the third quarter of 2023, Russia supplied about 12% of total gas imports to the EU.
