Representatives of the European Union distance themselves from the political position of the head of the Hungarian government, Viktor Orban, regarding the war in Ukraine.

This conclusion was reached at the American Institute for the Study of War. ISW experts wrote about this in their latest report, analyzing publications in Western media.

Experts noted that a negative reaction from European politicians was caused by Orban’s visits to Ukraine, Russia, China and the United States, where he tried to raise the topic of negotiations on Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The report states that EU Commission spokesman Eric Mamer said on July 15 that due to Orbán's recent actions, European Union leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, would not participate in informal meetings led by Hungary.

On the same day, Politico, citing unnamed EU diplomats, reported that EU High Commissioner Josep Borrell would hold an “official” council meeting on Foreign Affairs at the same time as the Hungarian Foreign Affairs Summit in Budapest at the end of August 2024.

Thus the EU Foreign Ministers xwant ” send a clear signal that Hungary does not speak on behalf of the EU.”

Swedish EU Affairs Minister Jessica Roswall told Reuters on July 11 that Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland would send government officials employees only for government meetings related to the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU in July 2024, and that other EU countries are considering a similar decision.
