EU candidate status for Ukraine and Moldova: Georgia was also promised, but there are conditions/Collage 24 channels
Georgia was not granted candidate status for EU membership along with Ukraine and Moldova on 23 June. But it can happen if the country takes some important steps. Because Georgia's European perspective has already been officially recognized.
This was announced by the head of the European Council, Charles Michel. But the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, described in detail what the Georgian authorities should do.
What conditions were put forward by Georgia
It should be noted that Charles Michel wrote this on his Twitter in two languages - English and Georgian. He stressed that now they have not only recognized Georgia's European perspective, but are ready to grant candidate status.
The European Council is ready to grant candidate status as soon as unresolved priorities are resolved. Congratulations to the Georgian people. A historic moment in EU-Georgia relations: Georgia's future lies in the EU, Michel wrote.
As for “unresolved” priorities, not much has been said about them. Von der Leyen emphasized that Georgia must:
- demonstrate political unity;
- engage civil society and move towards reforms.
However European policy noted that the next steps are quite achievable. “Georgia has reached this stage for the first time, you have a strong economy, you have made great political progress,” the President of the European Commission summed up.
Earlier, the Georgian authorities reacted violently
When the European Commission announced on June 17 that they recommend granting status to candidates in Moldova and Ukraine, Georgian politicians reacted quite violently.
Their Foreign Minister Ilya Darchiashvili said that Georgia had carried out large-scale reforms, so they “expected more.” But the president of the country reacted more violently and said that she belongs to the category of angry people.
However, both she and the minister stated that they would not stop their journey to Europe. And the president even announced the creation of a “commission on reforms” in order to obtain candidate status by the end of 2022.
What did the Prime Minister of Georgia blame Arakhamia for?
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said that the status they were not given a candidate because of the head of the Servant of the People faction. Like, he allegedly demanded this when communicating with representatives of the United States and European countries.
On June 22, Arakhamia recorded a video where he called on the people of Georgia “not to fall for fakes and provocations” of their government. However, he nevertheless confirmed that he had spoken about this country during his visit to the United States.
In the United States, I was engaged in arguing the concept that Ivanishvili channel) is a pro-Russian oligarch. He has a puppet government and, in fact, substitutes the ordinary Georgian people who want to join Europe.
The People's Deputy assured that Ukraine and our people will do everything to support Georgia in joining the EU. Also in this video, he stated that the distribution of the “anti-Ukrainian” fake is continuing precisely on the order of this oligarch.
