The European Union has denied sufficient democratic legitimacy to the inauguration of President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. This was reported by the Sputnik agency's Telegram channel with reference to the block's statement.
The EU authorities believe that this step aggravates the crisis in which the Belarusian state finds itself. British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab spoke in a similar vein on this topic earlier on September 24. According to him, this further undermines the authority of Lukashenko, who deceived his people in the elections.
Slovakia was the first of the EU countries to name Alexander Lukashenko as the illegitimate president of Belarus. Also, the representative of the German Cabinet of Ministers Steffen Seibert said that Lukashenka cannot count on democratic legitimacy. After that, the USA, Ukraine and Canada expressed a similar opinion.
The inauguration of Alexander Lukashenko took place at the Palace of Independence in Minsk on September 23. The ceremony was not broadcast on TV channels, the authorities hid its date until recently.
According to the Central Election Commission, Lukashenka won the presidential election on August 9 with 80 percent of the vote. In Belarus, for the seventh week, there have been mass protests of citizens who disagree with the official voting results.
