Europe should not be led by the Russians/Channel 24 website collage
Russia continues to threaten Lithuania and hopes that the EU and NATO will be afraid of these threats and make concessions. However, Russia does not have the resources to launch a full-scale confrontation.
Maxim Dzhigun, a political scientist, co-founder of the consulting company Good Politics Dzhigun.
Russia has already taken all the main steps
Maxim Dzhigun is sure that as of today, Russia has taken all its main steps – in the form of blackmail, intimidation and threats, against Western countries and Lithuania in particular. These were threats: “Either you agree to our ultimatum and fulfill its conditions, or we undertake to do something, but we won’t say what exactly. However, we’ll say that it will hurt and unpleasant you.”
This a classic practice of Russian “diplomacy”, which insists on the ultimatum execution of its unreasonable whims and incomparable with the language of diplomacy.
Now the ball is on the side of the field of the Europeans and the Russians are watching very closely to ensure that their threats are heard and that actions are taken in accordance with the wishes of Russia. So they wait. In the near future, we can expect some international messages from Russia to strengthen, that they are waiting for a decision, and the Kaliningrad region is under blockade. Russia will hope to reverse the overall Western policy and force European institutions to compromise with Russia and at least partially lift sanctions, Dzhigun said.
If you see surnames and first names in our news with a small letter, this is not a mistake, but the position of the editors regarding the actions of terrorist states and individuals who supported the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The expert noted that the situation with Suvalsky the corridor that the Russians are talking about is not new. For many years, this corridor served as a road for the delivery of the lion's share of goods to the Kaliningrad region.
Aggravations have occurred there many times, back in 2021, the Europeans had a rather unpleasant situation with refugees from Belarus trying to get to Poland. Then the crisis began and they began to reduce the admission of Russian trains, cars and other vehicles to the Kaliningrad region.
Now this situation is reaching a peak point – everyone understood that it could be politicized at one moment, as actually happened .

The interest of this Suwalki corridor is that if Russia planned to block this corridor with the help of Belarus, they would actually cut off Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia from the rest of the world. And it would be a complete blockade of these countries. The Suwalki corridor and the fact that it is not broken through is an important task for the NATO countries, in particular for Poland and Lithuania, which are directly involved in this thin segment of the border, – explained Dzhigun.
Russia has no opportunities to attack Lithuania
Maxim Dzhigun stressed that Russia has no opportunities for a full-fledged attack on the territory of Lithuania or Poland. And in principle, they understand that starting a confrontation with NATO countries is not very profitable for them. Moreover, having an absolutely unsuccessful war in Ukraine, it is very difficult to foresee success in other areas.
But to resort to such manipulative and information-psychological operations, which they have been doing for decades, and very successfully in the domestic market. They can continue this, exacerbate the existing crisis and the gulf between Russia and the Western World. They keep digging their own hole. Of course, the NATO and EU countries are forced to react to this, because we see that Russia is a very unpredictable player and you can expect anything from them. Even one of their provocations can develop into a large-scale conflict that will affect not only Ukraine, but also many other countries of the world, in particular, the Baltic countries. – Dzhigun noted.
The expert added that Lithuania, although a small, but very proud state with wonderful, progressive, democratic-minded people who are very worried and enraged by Putin, because they do not succumb to his influence, although they have a significant proportion of the Russian-speaking population there, for which Putin allegedly fights so much.
They show their categorical position in support of our sovereignty, integrity and our aspirations. And it is unlikely that anything will make them change their position, except for a possible compromise position of European institutions at the EU level.

But, in my deep conviction, an agreement between the Europeans and the Russians will be a huge diplomatic defeat for Europe in the first place. And a huge victory in terms of information for the Russians, because they will be able to sell it to themselves, how to put pressure on and influence the Europeans, to show their weakness, their inability to be a united front. And in the language of force, to bargain for some dividends,” Dzhigun added.
For Europe, this will be a defeat in the sense that they agree to such compromises when there are minimal threats or manipulations from Russia. I wished this wasn't allowed. Especially in view of the fact that the Kaliningrad region is not completely isolated and is not under blockade.
There is access by sea, which is used by the Russians. Therefore, be so kind, Russians, bring your products to your Kaliningrad region on your own by sea and don’t worry about anything. It will be very sad if the Europeans go along with the Russians and their threats.
A new threat from Russia: what you need to know
- Lithuania has banned the transit of sanctioned Russian goods through its territory. Neither trucks nor trains can go. They explained that they were simply following the EU sanctions policy. In the meantime, Russia is seriously “burned out” because of these restrictions. The enemy Foreign Ministry called Lithuania's actions a violation of international legal obligations.
- In addition, they began to loudly say that their hands were “untied”. And very soon they began training in the Kaliningrad region with Grads and Hurricanes.
- Lithuania responded to Russia's threats. The Foreign Ministry stressed that they only comply with the sanctions imposed by the EU. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said that there would be no concessions.
- It should be noted that Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are NATO countries, and the United States gave an unequivocal answer about the prevention of military actions by Russia.
