by alex

According to the new EU rules, Ukrainians, like citizens of many other countries, will be required to undergo additional registration through the ETIAS system before traveling to Schengen countries. This procedure requires the payment of a fee.

ICTV Facts found out what ETIAS is and what the entry fee to the EU will be.

ETIAS System: What is it

From May 2025, the rules for traveling to Europe for Ukrainians will change. To enter the Schengen area, it will be necessary to obtain an electronic ETIAS permit. This is a new system introduced by the European Commission in 2016 as a response to security challenges. It provides for preliminary verification of travelers' data.

Although the procedure for obtaining a permit is quite simple, Ukrainians should familiarize themselves with the new requirements in advance to avoid surprises during their trip.

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is an electronic platform that provides online registration and verification of data for citizens of countries that have a visa-free regime with the Schengen area.

This system allows border services to obtain the necessary information about the traveler before his arrival, which helps to speed up border crossing procedures and increase the level of security in Europe.

How to apply for ETIAS for Ukrainians

Obtaining an ETIAS travel authorization is quite simple and convenient. All you need to do is:

  • On the official portal of the European Information and Authorization System or through the ETIAS mobile application, you need to fill out an electronic form. The application section is not working yet.
  • Prepare your passport and provide a valid email address. The passport must be biometric.
  • You will have to pay 7 euros for a fee to enter the EU. This is a one-time fee for completing the application.

How long is ETIAS valid

ETIAS — This is not a visa, but an Electronic Travel Authorization that allows citizens of visa-free countries, in particular Ukraine, to visit the Schengen area.

The ETIAS authorization is valid for three years or until the expiration of the passport you indicated when applying.

With an ETIAS authorization, you can stay in the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days continuously within any 180-day period.

ETIAS simplifies the procedure for traveling to Europe for citizens of visa-free countries. By filling out an online application and paying a small fee, you will receive a permit that will allow you to travel freely within the Schengen area for three years.
