Roll noted that the Estonian government is currently analyzing this option, although Tallinn would prefer to carry out such actions within the framework of a NATO mission. He also does not rule out that the country will act as part of a smaller coalition.

— Discussions are ongoing. We must consider all possibilities. We shouldn't limit ourselves to what we can do — emphasized Roll.

He also stressed that it is possible that NATO countries that oppose such a step will change their minds “over time”.

Roll's comments come after the head of the Estonian Defense Forces, General Martin Herem, told Breaking Defense that several months ago the army discussed sending troops to western Ukraine to carry out work such as medical care, logistics or air defense of some Western cities.

At the beginning of May, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the possibility of sending Western troops into the territory of Ukraine. He named under what conditions this could happen.
