Estonia has taken the initiative to transfer ammunition to Ukraine. This will now be discussed by EU defense ministers at a meeting on March 7 and 8.
The details were told by Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur in an interview for Channel 24.
He stressed that Estonia had already offered to hand over at least 1 million 155mm howitzer shells and was continuing to press allies to do the same.
Note! Estonia transferred almost all of its 155mm howitzers to Ukraine. Our defenders have already completed their training on these artillery systems. According to the military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, there were no problems with the development of FH-70 howitzers, they are very similar to Soviet ones. Interestingly, the training lasted only two weeks.
Where can the EU get shells for Ukraine
The Minister of Defense of Estonia noted that 3 options for obtaining ammunition will be discussed at the upcoming meeting:
- use of own stocks,
- fulfillment of pending contracts,
- new purchases from European manufacturers.
So those are the three possible ways to get one million shells. And, of course, we will continue to promote this issue so that everyone understands why it is so important for Ukraine now,” Hanno Pevkur emphasized.
The head of the Estonian Ministry of Defense also noted that assistance from Western partners could be 10 times more than now. It is worth clarifying that Estonia itself is the largest donor of military aid to Ukraine.
