Amid talk of closing the border to Russians, “dragon teeth” have appeared in Estonia. These anti-tank buildings were noticed on the bridge between Narva and Ivangorod.

Several countries have already decided to restrict entry for Russians. Estonia may completely close border crossings with Russia.

What is known about the “dragon's teeth” in Estonia

At half past ten on November 16, a photo of a truck with “dragon teeth” was published on Facebook. Commentators' opinions were divided: some said there was no need to panic, others said that the borders could be closed at any moment.

Someone noted that the installation of the structures began around 20 pm. As users wrote, the passage for cars and buses was not closed, but there were also comments in the spirit of “what kind of circus with horses.”

The passage is open, there are five of them on each side along the bridge,” one of the correspondents comments.

Commentary from government officials

Border guards indicated that the concrete blocks were prepared to deter illegal migrants from Russia – if the authorities decide to close entry into the country.

The head of the Estonian Ministry of Internal Affairs says that Russia is letting people through without visas. They arrive at Finnish checkpoints, apply for international protection and thus remain in the country. On November 16, eight Somali citizens tried to enter Estonia. They were turned away because they did not have a Schengen visa or residence permit and did not apply for international protection. There may be more such people, so Estonia will be careful not to “increase migration pressure.”

Possible closure of borders with Russia

  • Estonians may close the border with Russia following Finland – completely or partially. It is obvious that after the closure of checkpoints on the Finnish side, migrants will go to Estonia and this is a kind of proactive action.
  • The Finns decided to close four of the eight border crossings. The reason is said to be that there are more refugees from Russian territory.
