French politicians accused President Emmanuel Macron of treason against the country. This happened after he allowed the lighting of the Hanukkah candle in the Elysee Palace.

In particular, both left- and right-wing politicians condemned the actions French leader. Representatives of the parties said that religion has no place in the secular residence of the president.

Macron was accused of treason against France

French President Emmanuel Macron invited Chaim Corsia, the chief rabbi of France, to begin the celebration of Hanukkah by lighting the first of eight candles. The event took place during a ceremony honoring President Macron for his efforts to combat anti-Semitism.

However, the release of video of the ceremony quickly sparked heated debate on social media. Prominent figures from different sectors of French society criticized the President for the fact that the introduction of religious elements into the secular sphere of the President was inappropriate.

Political leaders of both the right and left wing immediately blamed Macron in violation of the principle of secularism, which supports the idea of the existence of government regardless of any religious affiliation.

Will Macron now do the same for other religions? Some yes, others no? This is a dangerous spiral, said far-right French MP Alexis Corbière.

Such an act by the president even puzzled some French Jews. Condemned the actions of Macron and Jonathan Arfi, who heads the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions.

“This is why it cannot be allowed to happen again. French Jews have always considered secularism the law of protection and freedom. “what weakens secularism weakens the Jews,” he said. The rabbi was motivated by “the principles of the Republic and the promotion of unity.”

He also noted that if he actually performed a religious act or took part in a ceremony, it would indeed be a violation of secularism. But, according to him, this did not happen.
