UAV debris was found several times on the territory of Romania after attacks by Russian kamikaze drones on the Odessa region. In this regard, local authorities have introduced additional restrictions.

The Ministry of National Defense of Romania and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of this country have prepared a joint appeal. Both departments announced new restrictions due to falling drone debris.

What Bucharest decided

In Romania, flight restrictions have been tightened since September 13 borders with Ukraine. They concern the region of Northern Dobruja between the cities of Sulina and Galati. We are talking about the territory at a distance of 20 – 30 kilometers from the Romanian-Ukrainian border to an altitude of 4000 meters.

No manned or unmanned aircraft are allowed to fly in these restricted areas, with the exception of government aircraft, it said.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense noted that these restrictions are necessary to ensure more effective monitoring and control of the use of airspace across intensifying Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports on the Danube. The defense department also recalled that the first restrictions were introduced back in May 2022. Then the zone extended to a depth of 8 kilometers and a height of up to 1000 meters.

What do NATO say about the fall of drone debris in Romania

  • Recall that this country has membership in the Alliance. NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoane recently urged local residents to calm down and said there were no signs that Russia was planning to deliberately attack Romania.
  • NATO spokesman Dylan White made a similar statement. He also said that for the third time fragments of drones similar to those used by Russia were found in Romania.
  • Valery Klochok recently commented on the Alliance’s reaction to the actions of the aggressor country in a conversation with Channel 24. The head of the Tower Center for Public Analytics noted that NATO is slowly doing its job.
  • He recalled that British combat aviation began to control the Black Sea region, through which Ukrainian ships sail, and additional F-16s are based in Romania. All this points to certain shifts on NATO's part.
