Drifting in the Baltic: Germany detained a Russian oil tanker Irina Chebotnikova

An incident occurred near the island of Rügen on January 10. The tanker Eventin, which was carrying Russian oil, was drifting in the sea. Channel 24 has collected the details.

After the American sanctions, hard times will come for Russian oil. And although the Kremlin propaganda scares with oil price hikes, it is the Russians who need to prepare. After all, companies from the USA will no longer cooperate with them. And restrictions have been imposed on more than 180 tankers.

What is known about the drift of the Eventin vessel in the Baltic

The tanker was sailing under the Panamanian flag from Ust-Luga (the largest commercial port in Russia) to Port Said in Egypt. But on January 10, it slowly drifted, because it could no longer move. A tugboat detained it near the German island of Rügen. This is an island in the Baltic Sea and the largest island in Germany.

The tanker is reported to be hermetically sealed and does not pose a threat to the environment. But it is not known why it cannot move.

Eventin was built in 2006. He is not on the sanctions list.

The reaction of the German authorities

Annalena Baerbock made a tough statement. According to her, the incident is an example of why Germany, along with other countries, has called for new sanctions against the Russian fleet of oil tankers in recent months.

Russia threatens our, European security not only with its illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, but also with torn cables, disinformation campaigns, GPS interference and, of course, old oil tankers, she said.

Putin is not only circumventing sanctions, but also threatening tourism in the Baltic. With this, Baerbock hinted at the catastrophe with tankers in the Kerch Strait, as a result of which the Sea of Azov was polluted with fuel oil. There is also a threat to the Black Sea.

Boris Pistorius emphasized: Russia conducts hybrid attacks daily in the Baltic Sea and elsewhere. Germany is strengthening its military base in Nordholz in Lower Saxony.

Europe is awaiting the Baltic Summit of NATO member states. It will be held in Helsinki on January 14. They will talk, among other things, about protecting critical underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea and countering the threat from the Russian shadow fleet.
