Discussions are not ripe yet: what is the likelihood of an embargo on Russian gas and what are the 2 problems of sanctions

EU countries are not ready to impose an embargo on Russian gas/Collage 24 channel

Soon, representatives of EU member states will gather to discuss the next package of sanctions against Russia. But do not expect that it will include an embargo on gas from the aggressor country.

This was noted by journalist Rikard Jozwiak during the telethon. He noted that today, July 14, the first consultations on this issue should take place, Channel 24 reports.

The package of sanctions will be modest

Yozvyak added that Ukrainians may be somewhat disappointed with the new package of sanctions. Moreover, he once again emphasized that it should rather be called an augmented sixth, rather than a full-fledged seventh. It will discuss ways to bypass the sanctions by Russia. Also, the list will be replenished with new names, which will be subject to restrictions.

Sanctions on gold will also be considered. In addition, the upper limit of oil prices will be discussed. But two big problems remain: gas and nuclear power. They will probably not be included in the sanctions.

The journalist noted that the first consultations will be held today, July 14. And already on Wednesday, July 20, they plan to approve the relevant sanctions. But this is an optimistic forecast. In fact, everything can change if the representatives of the countries cannot reach an agreement.

It should be understood that there may be problems with making a decision. This has been seen the last time through Hungary it took six weeks to approve another package of sanctions.

Yozvyak added that some officials say it is not quite a package of sanctions. It would be more correct to call it an implementation agreement.

The issue of gas is the most sensitive

As for the embargo on Russian gas, the journalist called this issue the most sensitive. He stressed that it is painful for Western Europe. In particular, the Netherlands and Germany. And all because the cost of energy on the continent is very high.

At the same time, it would be nice if Russia cut off all the gas itself. Then, Yozwiak notes, she would impose sanctions on herself. And this would greatly alleviate the situation, because the European Union is literally not ripe for discussions on this issue.

Recall that Germany will completely stop buying Russian coal and oil. The first is from August 1, and the second is from December 31. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Finance Jorg Kukies during the energy forum in Sydney.

He stressed that the country was very dependent on these energy sources from the aggressor country. In Russia, she bought 40% of the amount that Germany uses for its needs. At the same time, the state is now discussing alternative sources of supply.
