Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau commented on the transfer of a turbine for the Russian Nord Stream 1 pipeline. He says it was a difficult decision.

Thus, the Canadian government allowed the refurbished turbine to be returned to Germany, which Russia would actually receive. Trudeau talks about a “difficult exemption from sanctions”.

The prime minister added that the sanctions “are directed against Putin and his aides and are not intended to harm Canada's allies.” However, he assured that Ottawa would unequivocally support Ukraine in the future.

Ukrainians in Canada appealed to the court

The World Congress of Ukrainians in Canada appealed to the government to cancel the decision, the organization's page informs. They asked that all anti-Russian sanctions remain and be strengthened.

Since these appeals were unsuccessful, the Ukrainians sued. They noted that the decision to grant permission was not justified and transparent.

This exception to the sanctions regime against Russia is absolutely unacceptable. There are real alternatives to Germany's gas needs, including purchases through the Ukrainian pipeline, the lawsuit noted.

Consequently, they demand to annul the decision to transfer the turbine.

Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba during a briefing stressed that Canada's decision is a mistake that puts Russia in a winning position. The decision will not solve, but only multiply the problems. The sanctions regime should not be adjusted to the whims or whims of Russia.

Kuleba is also watching the lawsuit of the Ukrainians. He added that even in Canada itself, many do not agree with such a precedent, since it leads to the destruction of sanctions.

What preceded it

  • Canada agreed to transfer a Siemens turbine to Germany in order to to resume full-fledged operation of the Russian Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline.
  • Siemens called this decision political. However, they noted that the turbine would be handed over as soon as possible.
  • The decision was condemned in Ukraine. Sergey Makogon, General Director of the GTS Operator of Ukraine, said that Canada was subjected to pressure from Russia. Adviser to the head of Naftogaz, Svetlana Zalishchuk, noted that the Ukrainian gas transportation system can provide additional volumes of gas supplies.
