The Czech gas transportation system has sufficient capacity to replace the current transit if Russian gas supplies via Ukraine are stopped.

This was announced by the Czech Minister of Trade and Industry Josef Sikela, the press service of the department reports.

Ukraine will stop gas transit from the Russian Federation — the position of the Czech Republic

According to Sikela, there are currently no signs of extending the agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine after 2024.

In this case, the European Union could lose 40-42 million cubic meters of gas per day.

That is why Europe should seek a replacement first and foremost from alternative suppliers.

— We must avoid a situation where we buy gas that is formally not Russian, but is exchanged for Russian gas during transportation to Europe, and we make no progress in our efforts to reduce supplies from Russia, — the head of the Ministry emphasizes.

Sikela is convinced: the use of gas coming from Western Europe, which could be transported through the Czech Republic, is the best alternative in this case.

— The capacity of gas pipelines on our territory is sufficient for this, he explained.
