Ukraine is actively using weapons provided by its partners. Including weapons made in the USSR.
As early as July 11, the command of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that Czech attack helicopters Mi-24V were already operating in the combat formations of the army aviation of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the same time, information that Ukraine could receive such combat helicopters from the Czech Republic was back in May 2022.
How many helicopters Ukraine received is not indicated. According to The Military Balance for 2021, the Czech Republic had only 7 Mi-24 helicopters. Probably, the Czech government handed over to Ukraine all seven available machines of this type – just a set for one squadron.
The Mi-24V (called the “crocodile” in the army) is a Soviet attack helicopter, an explosive mixture of an attack aircraft and an infantry fighting vehicle, ArmyInform writes. The helicopter is intended for the transfer of manpower and its fire support on the battlefield.
It can dramatically change course and altitude, as well as hover in the air. Such flight characteristics allow the Mi-24V to constantly maneuver, striking in the most important areas.
The modification of the Mi-24V helicopter has become a landmark, it was on it that the new Shturm anti-tank missile system with the Raduga guidance system was installed , with the help of which the “crocodile” can confidently fight enemy armored vehicles. Before the modification, four anti-tank missiles could be installed on the helicopter, and in 1986 their number was increased to sixteen.
This helicopter is the second largest in production after the US AH-64 Apache helicopter. To date, the Mi-24 is in service with several dozen armies of the world, in total 3.5 thousand units of helicopters of various modifications were produced.
