“The crisis and death are finally over”: in the south of the Gaza Strip they celebrate the ceasefire with Israel Sofia Rozhik

Israel and Hamas signed an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages on Wednesday, January 15. After this, celebrations of the ceasefire began in the southern Gaza Strip.

The White House promises that the agreement will end the fighting, increase humanitarian aid to the Palestinians and reunite the hostages with their families after more than 15 months of captivity, Channel 24 reports.

Palestinians rejoice at the ceasefire

Videos released from the Gaza Strip show streets packed with people celebrating, jumping, praying and waving Palestinian flags, as celebratory gunfire is heard.

It's a feeling that can't be described, we never expected to reach this point, even now we don't believe it, one Palestinian told CNN.

The man called the news of the agreement “a very big surprise for the Palestinian people and the world.”

“We wish many people could celebrate this moment with us, but they are in a better place now,” he added.

Palestinians rejoice that “this crisis, sadness, bombing and death is finally over ended”, and they will be able to return home.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden spoke about the path to this agreement. He concluded the exact plan on May 31, 2024, after which the document was unanimously approved by the UN Security Council.

“This is the result not only of the extraordinary pressure Hamas was under and the changing regional equation after the ceasefire in Lebanon and the weakening of Iran, but also of persistent and painstaking American diplomacy… It is high time to end the hostilities and begin working to develop peace and security,” the US president said in a statement.

By the way, a rally was also held on the streets of Tel Aviv in anticipation of news about the hostages. The vote on the agreement in Israel will be on Thursday, January 16.
