There are conflicting reports from Western media about upcoming military assistance. Initially it became known that the EU's 20 billion package did not find support among member states, but the latest news from Germany may cover this failure.

Political scientist, executive director of the International Association of Small Communities Alexey Buryachenko told Channel 24 about this. In his opinion, doubling German aid to Ukraine demonstrates Europe’s determination to help Ukraine in difficult times for the world.

Europe “lenders a shoulder” to the USA

For a long time, Kyiv was forced to reckon with the threat that the attention of Western partners could switch to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, recent reports suggest that, at least at the European level, this has not happened.

And this is not at all surprising, given the historic decision of the European Commission to begin accession negotiations with Ukraine. It means that Kyiv has ceased to be “Europe’s backyard”, and instead has become, in the minds of its countries, a member of the European family.

EU countries understand that Moscow's aggressive actions can spread to its members. And against the background of the crisis in the American Congress and the subsequent aggravation of the political struggle there, Biden asked Europe to “lender a shoulder” at this time, the political scientist suggested.

In order for the crisis in American politics to be resolved, time is needed, but Ukraine does not have it. Kyiv cannot simply “tighten its belts,” because the war continues and the need for weapons does not decrease.

“Given the situation, Germany is showing its leadership and setting an example for other friends of Ukraine as the locomotive of the European economy. I can predict that the next country that will show its integrity in supporting Kiev will be France, Berlin’s competitor for leadership in the EU,” he noted. Buryachenko.

What preceded the doubling of German aid

  • The idea of a pan-European 20 billion military aid package belonged to EU Commissioner for Foreign Policy Josep Borell. He shared it in the summer, noting that it will be designed for 4 years to ensure the stability of the supply of armed forces.
  • However, in November it became known that EU countries were not ready to support it, given the lack of funds in less wealthy countries. Therefore, funding for this project would likely fall on the shoulders of Europe's major economies.
  • At the same time, Berlin was not enthusiastic about this prospect and is trying to promote the idea of increasing arms supplies by each country individually. And with its decision to double the aid included in the country’s budget, Germany eloquently shows that it is not refusing to support Ukraine , despite the fact that its economy is going through hard times.
