Recently, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, a long-awaited meeting took place between US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The leaders of the two countries discussed a number of important issues, in particular, the war in Ukraine.

On Channel 24, political scientist Igor Reiterovich summed up the meeting between Biden and Xi Jinping, explaining how these negotiations will impact cooperation between the countries in the future.

The US played along with China

The results of this meeting are more positive than negative. The summit cannot be a failure because the leaders of the countries agreed to resume cooperation in certain areas. We are talking about the resumption of military communications.

This is a really important point. If we talk about the Taiwan issue, this indicates that the parties understand that there could potentially be actions that one of the parties will consider as provocations. In order for this not to provoke a war, it is necessary to have a direct connection that will allow this issue to be quickly discussed and resolved. – noted Reiterovich.

According to him, now the leaders have outlined only the framework, and then work will begin at a lower level, where certain steps and mechanisms of cooperation will be worked out.

The United States probably played along with the PRC informationally. The United States allowed the Chinese to enjoy the role of the second pole a little. However, from an economic and military point of view, China is not like that, but it is persistently approaching this goal.

We will see the real results of the conversation regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war with the help of indirect factors. That is, if China in the near future restricts trade in certain types of goods from Russia, then it is obvious that there was a hint from Biden and Xi Jinping understood it. – added Reiterovich.

He noted that perhaps a representative of China will be present at the next meeting dedicated to the Ukrainian peace formula. And then he will say that Beijing, together with Washington, decided to join this issue.

Taiwan issues

Biden has gone on record to say that the United States adheres to a one-China position and is opposed to escalation of the conflict. However, the Chinese love to play diplomatic games with formal statements.

According to analysts, Xi Jinping assured Biden that China does not intend to retake Taiwan militarily. They can do it in another way,” the political scientist said.

Elections will soon take place in the United States and, according to one of the scenarios, a pro-Chinese bloc of parties advocating closer integration with Beijing or the start of negotiations on this integration may win. China, in a political sense, can achieve a solution to the problem through democratic mechanisms.

As Reiterovich noted, China has a serious economic dependence on the United States. Trade turnover between the two countries averages a trillion dollars. Therefore, Beijing is much more interested in the normal development of relations with the United States. This works both in the context of Taiwan and in the context of relations with Russia.

“The Chinese do not need a big war for one simple reason – they are not ready for it. The US nuclear potential is three times greater than that of China. In order to achieve parity, the Chinese need decades,” the political scientist emphasized.

What did the Russians see in these negotiations?

The meeting between Biden and Xi Jinping significantly tensed the Russians. At least in the understanding of one very simple truth – Russia does not and cannot have any claim to global dominance or leadership.

Two countries that decide all the issues in the world have met. They talked about Russia as an object that needs to be somehow influenced in order for this object to change its trajectory,” Reiterovich added.

The Russians commented on this meeting very carefully, without drawing any big conclusions.
