The Chinese military has strongly condemned the presence of the US Navy destroyer Gabriel Giffords at Second Thomas Shoal, declaring it a “serious attack on China's sovereignty and security.”

The Chinese side also argued that the emergence of the littoral combat ship had seriously “jeopardized regional peace and stability.” In addition, the military has highlighted the United States as “the main threat to this peace and stability in the region.”

Responding to these allegations, US Seventh Fleet Commander Megan Green explained that the US vessel was simply conducting routine operations in international waters, fully complying with established international laws and regulations.

Bloomberg journalists emphasized that Beijing has still not named a candidate to replace suspended Defense Minister Li Shangfu, despite the fact that during the meeting between Xi Jinping and Joe Biden, China agreed to political discussions with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. Thus, a prolonged lack of communication increases the risk that an incident in the South China Sea could escalate into conflict.
