The German self-propelled anti-aircraft gun Gepard proved to be very effective for the air defense of Ukraine. The Ukrainian military shared some interesting details about the operation of this anti-aircraft gun.

Oleg Katkov, editor-in-chief of Defense Express, spoke about thisChannel 24. According to him, the information from the German media about the possible transfer of additional Gepard installations to Ukraine is extremely positive.

Why Gepard turned out to be so effective

As Katkov emphasized, the Gepard installation can hardly be considered cutting-edge technology. She was removed from service with the Bundeswehr back in the 2000s. However, it proved to be very effective in Ukraine. This system accurately shoots down both kamikaze drones and cruise missiles.

One of the advantages of Gepard is the presence of its own radar system, which calculates all the details about hitting targets. The crew takes aim at a conditional kamikaze drone, and then everything works automatically.

I heard information from the fighters that in order to destroy Shahed-136, 1 (maximum 2) bursts are needed. This is up to 14 shells. Despite the fact that usually (out of similar installations – Channel 24) you need somewhere around 7 – 8. This is quite economical when we talk about such cheap drones as the Shahed-136, – Katkov noted.

It should be added, that thanks to its own radar, Gepard can operate at any time of the day and in any weather. For example, it is much more difficult for the same MANPADS crews to shoot down targets at night or in fog.

The only problem with Gepard rigs is ammo. But it is gradually being solved.

There is a problem with the specific 35mm ammunition for the cannon that is installed there. Their production license belongs to a Swiss company, and they block re-export. Although now there is talk that they can make exceptions. Before that, there was an attempt to negotiate with Brazil, but they refused to transfer both equipment and ammunition. – said Katkov.

The German Rheinmetall is already starting production of these ammunition. Therefore, the problem will be solved.
